All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Celebrity Culture

Appearances Can Be Deceptive

We all have grown up hearing this adage that everything that glitters is not gold, barely we felt a need to ponder about this very common saying why it has been originated and what is its relevance in our behavioral approach.  Not just children but very often adults also fall prey to the glitter and glamour of their favourite celebrities without an iota of realization whether these ‘Glam Gods’ deserve their love and worship or not. The recent incidents of drug abuse, social media vitriols and publicity stunts by our favourite actors have grabbed our attention towards the big chasm of difference between their personal and public life.

All Glitters Is Not Gold

Celebrities: The ‘Gods’ of Modern Culture

Celebrities are the ‘Gods’ of our modern culture just like kings and the royalties were in the past. They are highly adored by the general public and when these stars, larger than life heroes are accused of being drug addicts, having a lowest set of moral and ethical values, aren’t we forced to feel whom we are following and worshipping uselessly and for what reasons.

Interesting Read: Kindness Turns A Person Into A Human

It’s very important for the people who have a public life to maintain their demeanour and a life of values and authenticity as they are the icons for youth and carry dreams of millions through their journey of success. It doesn’t mean that they can’t have their personal life but one can’t deny that the people in public eye have more of a responsibility because they are symbols of success and excellence in the domain; moreover they are the trend-setters. Unfortunately it doesn’t happen at all so it becomes our responsibility to always take their words with a pinch of salt primarily because their societal position does not justify the correctness of their opinions. Big companies and powerful political leaders also use them for their greedy advancement and vested interests.

It’s impossible to escape the ‘celebrity cult’ and observing the youth imitating their moves, dresses, make up and speaking styles is really condescending. They exert negative moral influence when exposed in their private lives. Not just this, they create stereotypical beauty standards with a particular body type, skin color, tiny nose and perfect facial features over and over again. Instead of celebrating diversity in beauty we shunt every other kind of ‘imperfect’ beauty to the sideline and rarely ever mention intelligence or personality.

As huge movie fans, we all believe in the hard work and perseverance these actors put in. For the same, the entertainment industry can be a source of inspiration, powerful commentary or great laughs but the social power they hold goes far beyond their movies and it’s a crucial time that this power has to be checked.

The solution is to disengage with the celebrity world. It’s hard to escape the constant barrage of information and sneak peeks that overwhelm us everyday, but believe me it’s worth it. Each of us can make the choice to de-glamorize celebrity and step away from the damaging culture of celebrity worship. Only this way we can help our youth and younger generation limit the inordinate cultural power Bollywood currently commands.

  4. Very correct assessment. So far I am concerned, I never considered these เคซिเคฒ्เคฎी เคจเคšैเคฏा as Heroes. But most of the younger generation consider them heroes and try to copy their dressing, hair style and every thing. My real heroes are my parents, my Acharya, my teachers and War heroes like Abhinandan.
Very nice article on the present day's diminishing cultural and social values. The flow and articulation of the blog is commendable. My blessings to you for such a beautiful blog.

    1. Yes sir, the problem is the continuous flow of information about their life on social media platforms. Youngsters can't escape and fall trapped. A grave concern if their dreams are shattered when their heroes are exposed.
Thank you sir for your words.

  5. the people who we make overnight celebrities by admiring and preachings their acting skills must not forget that same people can bring them down if not acted according to people's expectations...they are doing their job the one that helps them earn bread but the sad fate is they are put in priority list and they top the list of influencers where parents, teachers and great sports and great academic personalitied should be there..they get pampered so much that they start to consider themselves God forgetting the fact that they too are humans....the money they earn is a million times more than what a common man earns and a zillion times more for a true hard working person like farmers and labourers..they the ones who provide you services at minimum wage and provide food to eat ..the things necessary for one's libel but no one click selfies with them..as soon as something happens in the life of celebrities the people shower their concerns and wishes but when it happens in the life of a common man this range of concern and wishes gets spread only among the close relatives and that too just for a day or two ...why?

  7. Since last fifty years, the films are systematically targeting a particular religion and praising the other. The reason is obvious. Mafia and Dawn's are financing these films. I have stopped going to theatre since last 20 years.

    1. Well said,All that glitters is not gold. We should accept the fact that celebrities live two lives one which is disclosed in the front of the camera n the other which is not shown on the camera. The recent drug case has prooved that we should not just go crazy about the celebrities because u never know how are they performing in their personal lives. May be apart from drugs there may be lot of other things also which they might be doing n they are still not open up in the media n which can again take a lot of years to figure it out. So explain the youth of the India that the real heroes are the soldiers in the Indian army who r fighting for us on the border no matter whatever is the weather condition they just have to protect our country so a real salute to the Indian soldiers.

    2. Beautifully expressed dear Reader. Our army deserves more respect and adoration than these celebrities. Hope we will be able to teach them these differences. Thanks for your words.

  9. This is such an apt reading when the media and news channels are bombarded with the dog food an actress' pet eats , or the diaper an actors' kid wears or salary drawn by caretaker of a celebration child.. what do these things matter in our life. Such a hallucination of heroism these so called heroes and heroines have been associated to. Real heroes are given no footage in real life. Really the economic demonstrative effect these people lay on layman is massive.considering the impact and influence these entertainers have, they can be used to create good social behaviors, uplifent practices rather than just exhibiting obscenity.. looking forward for your further readings..

I find this blog very relevant and thought evoking.Even to many a grown up with high educational qualifications seeing is believing. They lack prudence to distinguish the real from the imaginary. This can be solved to some extent by inculcating visual literacy even from the tender age, I think. Thanks Rachna for discussing this topic.

    1. Thanks a lot dear Reader for your words on my blog. Yes, it's our earnest duty to teach and train our children to analyze the real meaning of stardom. What we see is not always the same as it is seen.

For many of the glamorous stars, it is a lonely life with hectic work and everyone breathing orders and commands to get things done to perfection. Very few are able to balance between glam and normal life. Most often, I pity them but at certain moments, I envy them too.

  13. Rachna ji,
It truly reflects what's going in our society at present, time to decide whether these entertainer should have the place as heroes (shadow or camouflage may be correct word) to our childrens or for ourselves !!
In my view this stream is never be pure or worthy to follow basically most of them are purely professionals running for the money and publicity .
It is true that due to high penitration of internet & social media tools & biased media each & everything is known to everyone now , whether it's good or bad.
This medium (bollywood) is now currupt due to nepotism & it's true that thia is controlled by f pedigree of few media families & they use it for there on interest and beliefs , which is not right , because nowadays we are seeing that films are not made for elevate & create moral values, ethics , nationalism etc, rather they are more shifted / based on darker side of society like live-in relationships, targeting religious sentiments for mere publicity, promoting drugs, alcohol, cigarette etc due to commercial & revenue pressure.

It is really right time to avoid such media for betterment of new generation & also teach them to choose wisely & educates them that with current examples of drugs connection that this bollywood world is very fake, hollow & wierd from inside.
